Essay / Why young people get into debt - 1161
Why young people get into debtIn today's world, young people use debt to live what they think is an easy life, buy unnecessary items to follow the latest trends, party, and switch from credit card to credit card to pay accumulated bills. In my opinion, young people do not know or understand how credit works and what it takes to assume the responsibilities of owning a credit card. Another reason young people take on debt is due to college loans. Some students jump from school to school without knowing exactly what career they want to pursue, and others jump from school to school using financial aid to obtain luxuries they normally couldn't afford. I think the main reason for debt accumulated during the early years of adulthood is irresponsibility. Young people get into debt because they lack knowledge, have many student loans, and are irresponsible when it comes to managing their debt. Lack of knowledge plays a big role in youth debt. Credit cards are often offered to young adults right out of high school. Many take advantage of having a credit card without even thinking about the responsibilities that come with it, but instead think about the things they will be able to buy. In “Generation Debt,” author Tamara Draut argues that young people are getting into debt younger than ever. Two of the biggest financial strains on young college students are car repairs and travel for students who have family and friends in other states (231). From my experience, I know firsthand what it was like to be offered credit cards right out of high school, and I didn't hesitate to get them. I am...... middle of paper...... they buy things on credit without taking into account that life is constantly changing, there are always unexpected obstacles on the road that catch us off guard and can change our financial situation, they are too concerned with being young and having fun, and getting things easily. Some struggle because of the life situations they have been thrust into, but most struggle because they got into it and are too unwilling to change their lifestyle to get to a better place. Then there are those who don't care, but pursuing their dream career has overwhelmed them with school loans. Young people lack the knowledge and responsibility to manage their credit cards and take care of their debts, and some are simply trying to get the job they've dreamed of since they were young, forcing them to pay later in life mentally, emotionally and financially..
