  • Essay / Social movement: a time bomb or a timeless...

Throughout history, discontent has been felt by various groups of people. This discontent could be generated by modernization or by undesirable conditions. As a result, social movements are established to bring similar people together to fight for a common cause. Traditional Chinese foot binding and the controversial Lost Boys of Sudan demonstrate exactly this situation, reinforcing the idea that the concept of social movement can be seen as a cross-cultural phenomenon. Written by Feng Jicai, The Three-Inch Golden Lotus centers on a woman. named Fragrant Lotus, and the influence of foot binding on her life. At the beginning of the story, Fragrant Lotus is introduced as a young child raised by her grandmother, whom she affectionately calls Granny. As her sole caregiver, Fragrant Lotus places great trust in her grandmother, but when the time comes for her to have her feet bound, she is completely terrified. Dating back to 961, the practice of foot binding was deeply ingrained in Chinese culture, until its abolition in the early 20th century. A very painful and tedious procedure, foot binding involved the repeated breaking of the thin, unripe bones in a young girl's feet. The feet were then tied extremely tightly with strips of cloth until they could fit into a three-inch shoe. A custom passed down from generation to generation, foot binding was considered the rite of passage from girl to woman. Additionally, bound feet, also called "lotuses", were considered a measure of a woman's beauty and were a determining factor in her ability to marry. Grandma, a wise woman, knew the good fortune that a perfect pair of lotuses would bring and carefully invested in her granddaughter's future. What followed for Fragrant Lotus...... middle of paper ...... a new and better future for Sudanese boys arriving in America. Due to the difficulty of getting used to American traditions, job searching, although widespread, is not an easy journey. Operation Prosperity, or OP, proposes a new financing system to develop jobs specifically for Sudanese. Through this program, Lost Boys can build lasting friendships and relationships with others facing similar struggles, while leaving their mark on American soil. OP industries would create various jobs in designated areas, like Atlanta, that would be specifically for the Lost Boys, instead of competing with other masters of American culture. Through Operation Prosperity, the Lost Boys would experience less stress associated with coming to America, while learning the ways of the average American in the job market..
