Essay / Immediate feelings and recalled feelings presented in...
Williamworth was considered one of the two poets who launched the Romantic era. His view on poetry was that it should be able to be understood by the common man as well as the educated. Worth's "marriage of feeling and thought" (Elements of Literature) is one of the reasons why his poetry is not only widely understood, but has also made him arguably "the finest poet of the era”, as Coleridge would say. This “marriage” is clearly visible in Worth’s “Surprised by Joy” through the use of meter, rhyme, sound, and punctuation. This idea is reinforced by the fact that all of the lines in the poem are between ten and twelve syllables, which again is a more natural feeling as that is usually the number of syllables that are spoken in a single breath. Making this poem more accessible to everyone helps show that these mixed feelings when a loved one dies are natural and can be shared by everyone.
