  • Essay / Looking Ahead - 1082

As I thought about my future, I was able to identify three goals to work toward to improve my life. The first goal is personal, my fiancé and I have been trying to save for a house and a car and this is the year we are going to make the purchases. My second goal is professional, in the future I would ideally like to become a social worker. However, thinking about the immediate future, I would like to find a job that will give me real-world experience in my chosen field of study. Finally, my third objective concerns my online training. My goal is to graduate on time with honors and I am willing to work hard to achieve this. As MacLeod stated: “In order to achieve a single goal, multiple enabling or supporting goals typically need to be achieved” (2012). Therefore, a plan must be put in place in order to achieve your goals successfully. When approaching your goals, it's best to do it in a SMART way, that is, make sure your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. -related (Cohen, 2013). Starting from my personal goal of buying a house and a car, I developed a specific action plan. Specifically, my fiancé and I are looking at a used 2003 Volkswagen Jetta that costs three thousand dollars. We have more than half the money saved for the car and we pay all our bills before we make the purchase, so we don't incur any additional expenses. In reality, we need this car so we can travel and look at potential homes for sale in the neighborhood we want. We can afford to buy a car, so it's doable, but we're waiting until May to make sure our bills will be paid. Getting the car before this date is doable, however, sticking to the schedule will ensure we can afford the insurance payments and still have money in our pocket. Once we have the car, we can then start looking at houses that I have kept a list of and thus begin the process of buying a house. We narrowed our search to Westchester, New York and a one hundred and fifty thousand dollar home is feasible. Once we have our car, we will most likely use a real estate agent, which is essential when looking for a home. The house can't be more than an hour and a half from my fiance's job and we'd like to move by the end of the year.
