The article “Culturally Sensitive Anger Treatment Among African American Women: A Single Case Study” by Antonio Gonzalez-Prendes and Shirley A. Thomas, focused on anger treatment among African American women, based on culturally acquired attitudes and beliefs. Gonzalez-Prendes and Thomas suggest that three main issues influence “the experience and expression of anger among African American women” (p. 383). These three main issues include the socialization of gender roles around expressing anger, powerlessness, and culturally bound messages that create an impractical expectation of strength. The messages of strength taught to African Americans are reinforced from a young age, which ultimately shapes how anger should be expressed. Consideration must also be given to how women deflect or redirect their anger. This can be done in four different ways: containment (avoiding expressing anger), internalization, segmentation (detachment from angry feelings), and externalization (projecting blame for uncomfortable feelings). This article also allows the reader to understand how African American women derive their expectations of strength. African American women are taught, through their culture, that they must be strong women; however, these assumptions create an unrealistic characterization. This unrealistic idea then creates a trap for these women. On the one hand this allows them to face adversity and on the other it creates a false image of “superwoman”. These women too can then find themselves “caught in a double bind: on the one hand she can experience anger and resentment linked to the lack of control over her own life and on the other she…… middle of paper” .. ....this is where their anger comes from. Although I found the article interesting and useful for my future career, I found the article very repetitive. I would have preferred the article to focus more on the treatment plan rather than repeating why the client was experiencing these issues. I felt the authors described the reason for the customer's anger perfectly in the background information. I think the case study should have focused more on changing and treating the client rather than the reason for her anger through her culture. Overall, the article was very interesting and opened my eyes to new ways of thinking. This article will be helpful in my future endeavors as a professional. I will be able to use this knowledge with future clients and be able to follow up with this particular type of treatment style..
