Jorge Chavez is considered a hero in Peru, the country where I was born, for being the first man to attempt to cross the Alps by plane. Although he failed to achieve his goal because his Blériot XI crashed upon landing, the bravery and courage he demonstrated during his lifetime were instrumental in his professional success. Chavez was not born in Peru, but his parents agreed to register him at the Peruvian consulate in Paris as a foreign-born Peruvian citizen. “Yo soy Peruano”, he declared to people who asked him his nationality: “I am Peruvian”. Since childhood, Chávez excelled as an athlete and, at the same time, showed himself to be a responsible and disciplined person. At the end of his secondary studies, he decided to specialize in engineering and therefore enrolled at the Violette school in Paris. In addition, the first powered flight of the Brazilian Santos Dumont, on October 23, 1906, gave rise to Jorge Chávez's desire not only to produce but also to pilot airplanes. As he became more and more interested in aviation, upon leaving university, he went to Reims, a city in the north-east of France, to attend the "Great Aviation Week of the Champagne”, the first international aeronautical gathering in history. It was a great opportunity for Chavez to befriend French aviator Louis Paulhan who had already participated ...... middle of paper ...... in aviation history. His courage will always be an example to those involved in aviation. In my case, I admit that before starting this diary, I wondered why Jorge Chávez was so recognized in my country. Now I feel satisfied that I was able to learn more about his life and achievements and that I helped spread his story.Works CitedDel Aguila, Humberto. “The Glorification of Jorge Cháveziario Universal September 24, 1937: A4.
