Essay / Homosexuality: Respecting the Choices of Others - 303
Since the 1800s, psychiatrists and psychologists have concluded that homosexuality is a mental disorder. They believed it was due to misguided upbringing and their social environment. For example, it was believed that if the child did not have a male figure in the home, he would most likely be gay. Or that child abuse can lead to lesbianism when a little girl's special needs are denied, ignored or exploited and the child's future womanhood is in danger. However, inconsistencies in the research subjects' abuse records ruled out these theories. And if that were the case, why is homosexuality present in different cultures? Some believed that homosexuality was caused by a difference in brain structure. In 1991, Simon LeVay published research that suggested sexual orientation may be the result of different brain structures. The hypothalamus, a region of the brain that governs sexual behavior, was the structure LeVay pointed to as being the structure involved. In his studies of the hypothalamus, he found that in homosexual men, the hypothalamus was smaller than that of heterosexual men. Rather, it was the size of the female hypothalamus, which therefore explained their sexual tendencies. What I believe is that everyone has the right to live their life in the way that suits them and makes them happy, as long as they don't do it themselves. negatively influence someone else's life. I also believe that a homosexual person should have the same rights as any other heterosexual person, because after all, we are all human beings. Many may say that "oh yes, the Bible condemns it", but the Bible also says: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." ยป I think we, as humans, have developed this negative behavior in the face of difference. Some may compare homosexuality to incest, sexual assault and rape, but such a comparison is entirely unfair because in the case of incest, sexual assault and rape, it there is no free consent..
