  • Essay / Academics: The Kryptonite of Sports Superheroes

    Every young boy dreams of being the next LeBron James, Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, and the list goes on. The reality is that few young boys achieve this dream. Academics seem to be the kryptonite of these supermen. While some student-athletes believe that a college education is unrealistic, some student-athletes believe that a college education is prohibitive. Academics are supposed to be challenging. It doesn't matter if you are an athlete or a non-athlete. Some students will take remedial or elective courses in a certain major to remain eligible. I am against any college athlete who chooses to take remedial classes and electives to remain eligible to play. A lot of people say I'm crazy for encouraging student athletes to sign up for harder classes. The answer is simple: “are we helping them or hurting them in the long run?” » Academic studies are the basis of all great success. Additionally, those responsible are parents, teachers and the NCAA.
