  • Essay / Racial profiling is unfair - 600

Even though some might believe that racial profiling does not exist and that if it does exist it is used to keep society safe, it is more correct to say that he disrespects and mistreats innocent citizens. More and more people are arrested each year for crimes they did not commit and are singled out because of their race. Being the victim of racial profiling, harassment and mistreatment is a situation that Latinos, Asians and African-Americans experience every day. I believe people should not be arrested and judged because of their physical appearance. This is something that takes away the rights of the individual and is very disrespectful. People start getting arrested because of the way they are dressed or, even worse, because of the color of their skin or the culture they were born into, which they cannot change. Some races being stopped and searched more than others. As the article Jim Crow Policing states, “84 percent of stops in the first three quarters of 2009 were of black or Hispanic New Yorkers” (Herbert 37). How would you feel if you were harassed because of your heritage and the color of your skin? Most people will be angry and upset and I think we have a right to do that because it's unfair to be singled out for something like this. Families are discouraged from traveling because they do not want to be bothered by law enforcement for their image. As noted in the article, Hollywood couple arrested by police claims they were victims of racial profiling: "I've been stopped by the police before, but I've never been in fear for my life" (Duke Hawkins-Gaar 1). This was said by Johnson, a young woman who was trying to go on a romantic getaway with her boyfriend until they were stopped to be searched by the police, because they were African American.... .. middle of paper..... According to the police, they were racially profiled: "...every time she returns to her hometown from Los Angeles, she is stopped by the police 80% time and questioned about drugs” (Duke Hawkins-Gaar 3). We should show people courtesy when they are stopped and monitor how well we do it. It is wrong and unfair for us to judge someone based on their race, it makes us seem ignorant. I believe we should all be treated fairly, even if we don't all look the same. Law enforcement must reduce the number of people stopped and searched. We wouldn't like to be judged based on completely different people, so we shouldn't do it to others. Works Cited Duke, Alan.
