Everyone will always have their own opinion, but more than two-thirds of countries have abolished the death penalty. More than half of the American population now prefers alternatives to the death penalty as the best punishment. This is not a deterrent; in 2008, 14 states had homicide rates below or equal to national rates without capital punishment. One of the arguments is money, but did you know that it costs less to keep them alive than to kill them. The death penalty would remain more costly than other alternative penalties, even if appeals were abolished. Meanwhile, that money could be spent on resources for crime prevention, mental health treatment, education and rehabilitation, meaningful victim services, and substance abuse treatment programs . Execution is not the only punishment we must inflict on those who have committed such crimes that we have had to sentence them to the death penalty. We don't need to put them in a 6 foot by 8 foot cell like the rest of the criminals in a low security prison. We can lock them in the same 60 square foot cell as if they were going to die. 23 hours of solitude, no contact with anyone, none of these “luxuries” that other prisoners enjoy, the same routine.
