  • Essay / Morality and social taboos - 1022

Ethical judgments effectively limit the methods available in the production of knowledge, both in the arts and in the natural sciences. Each system or method has its weaknesses and strengths. Morality is reinforced by social taboos against certain moods. (Li) I believe that ethical judgment is somewhat detrimental to understanding a work of art. In most works of art, there are many underlying themes present. When a work is censored and not considered “ethical,” we lose the true meaning of what the artist is trying to create. The desired knowledge or understanding of the piece transforms into a different meaning. Each of us sets our own ethical codes, but I believe our society has manipulated our minds to conform to their “ethical” ideas. It's a conscious thought and it's something we do by instinct. There are different ethical groups or religions, such as Christianity or Muslims. These different religions follow different beliefs. Muslims read the Quran and believe certain things are unethical, unlike Christians who use the Bible. Every religion teaches a similar code of ethics. They emphasize respect for other religions but force you to conform to their religion. We view religious people as highly ethical people, they must act in a certain way and follow certain guidelines. We adopt certain characteristics from our parents that we don't notice early on. Our parents teach us the right way to do certain things and what is ethical and unethical. These teachings fundamentally shape us. This can have multiple consequences, for example, being raised “ethically” can cause a child to rebel and commit unethical acts. This translates into later life. The people we hang out with and develop friendships with...... middle of paper...... ics. In my examples above, the main problem is the dilemma of making a mistake. It's difficult to produce good work if you don't make mistakes. Mistakes are the key factor, I believe in producing quality work. If one judges the other for their mistakes and can only focus on the negative aspects of their work, then I believe they are not being moral themselves. It all comes down to opinions about what is ethical and moral. In reality, we cannot have an exact definition of what is moral or ethical. Global ethical judgments effectively limit the methods available for knowledge production, both in the arts and in the natural sciences. Artists and scientists are afraid to express themselves. They censor and limit their own knowledge to please the people. Without limits, one could express oneself freely and show the true works of art and discoveries of the artist and scientist..
