    Armed with a good understanding of omens and their interpretations, one can succeed. Santiago arrives in Tangier to have all his money stolen. He invokes the stones Urim and Thummim, which he received from Melchizedek, these stones must guide him in reading the omens. He asks them: “Will I find my treasure? » As he searched for one of the stones, they both fell to the ground, he saw this as an omen (Coelho 44). In this case, Santiago was at a crossroads, having just lost everything he owned, he could easily have given up on his search for his “Personal Legend” (26). When Santiago travels to the oasis, he is able to discern the significance of the hawks' flight in a vision warning of an attack on the oasis itself. At first Santiago is hesitant to share his vision with anyone, but then he remembers what the old king had told him: “Always heed omens” (102-116). Santiago not only learns to trust omens more, but he begins to see himself as a strong person with the qualities of a leader. His character develops further as he becomes more confident
