Essay / The controversial concept of honor
“Dishonor! Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow! Almost everyone has seen Mulan or at least heard of the scene in which Mushu, the dragon, says this iconic quote. Most people saw this moment as an attempt to find humor in an archaic Disney concept, but in reality the concept of honor is very ubiquitous (and rather controversial) in almost all times and places , including America today. Why do I say controversial? This follows from the very definition of honor. The Oxford Dictionary, and indeed most members of society in general, consider honor to be the adherence to doing what is right. But that's where the problems start. Is there really a “right” way to do things, at least a way that everyone agrees with? Even within groups of similar people, such as the NHS, where all members have the same work ethic, there will be radically different opinions on just about everything. What I consider the right thing to do may be considered completely unethical by someone else. Does this mean I should just refrain from taking steps to avoid doing something that could be considered wrong? Absolutely not. Say no to plagiarism. Or rather, when they do, they refuse to even acknowledge, let alone take responsibility for, the people they have hurt. This is the world we in the NHS, or rather our generation, are entering. These people (myself included), these authors of all the essays you are reading now, are going to become these politicians, these leaders, but hopefully with a sense of honor. It's one thing to preach an ideal, but quite another to stick to it even if it means you have to take responsibility for it, and it's the latter that best demonstrates honor. If there was one word I would use to describe society, I would say it's fluid; trends come and go and mentalities do the same. What was once considered fallacious and unconventional is now considered common sense and, in fact, not doing it or not knowing it would be considered bizarre. And how does this transition take place? Not just by physical evidence and logical reasoning, but simply by the mere presence of a person who tried to do what they thought was right and suffered the consequences. Take Malala Yousafzai for example. Malala is considered an exceptionally honorable woman (and was honored with a Nobel Peace Prize) not only for her admirable mission, but more importantly for her determination to stick to her goals despite all the ramifications. So for me, and quite possibly the rest of the NHS applicants, who are wondering what difference I could make to society, acting with honor would be my best bet. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
