Essay / The Mind of Margaret Edson: Truth is the Motivation of Idealism
Truth is the Motivation of IdealismTruth is comparative; this is not accurate, specifically in nature. We human beings describe this as something truthful and logical and as something that happened. However, since we, as human beings, have entered into a struggle over what "TRUTH" actually is, this already suggests that we have difficulty defining what "TRUTH" is. This is where idealism comes in, because truth is based on our worldviews. In Wit by Margaret Edson, Vivian Bearing is a professor with fatal ovarian cancer whose life revolves around knowledge and education. For many people, balance is a fundamental part of life. Sustaining the balance between idealism and truth is an incredible part of a stable and satisfying life. Vivian expresses that being idealistic in one's being and one's career is important, but one must also recognize the reality of life. When she learns she has cancer, Dr. Kelekian tells her to be tough. In a flashback, she tells the audience: "And I know for a fact that I am tough. A demanding teacher. Uncompromising. Never one to shy away from a challenge. That's why I chose, while I was a student of the great EM Ashford, studying John Donne." (6). Porter matches her intellectual curiosity with her emotional strength, since the only thing that relaxes her while turning her head is a stimulating literary text. Vivian uses her high standards of education to motivate herself to be tough during her final hours of cancer, but with all her knowledge, she seems unbalanced in her life. Vivian's idea of idealism and the truth of existence is to contribute fully to the knowledge of all that it does. In my project I choose the EQ "meaning of idealism and truth in the individual...... middle of paper.... ..in this quote it shows the moment when it begins to identify the truth about her life and what it might change if she survives longer. But unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to change their lives and Vivian is one of those people “this is my place in the last scene, here the sky fixes my pilgrimages to the last mile” (34). Everyone in this life has the opportunity to realize the true term and balanced with idealism to live a comfortable life, and death is not the only obstacle that stands in the way of change, but it can take a person in a second. So be aware of understanding the truth and meaning of your life, and be able to change it to live a fulfilled life. Therefore, sometimes in life we are so concerned about the bad days that we have the ability to recognize our entire life. But time is a powerful factor in changing what we recognize in our lives..
