In 2016, Equal Pay Day will take place on Tuesday, April 12th. Betsey Stevenson, a member of the Council of Economic Advisers, wrote an article titled "Five Facts About the Gender Wage Gap" for whitehouse.gov, which states that the wage gap goes beyond just wages. Stevenson goes on to argue that women are also less likely to receive benefits such as health insurance and have access to paid leave (Stevenson). Stevenson also puts forward the idea that as a woman's career grows, so does the pay gap between her and her male colleagues. It is stated in the article that men and women tend to start with the same income levels, but this gap widens as their careers progress (Stevenson). Stevenson says this is likely because women get fewer raises because they tend to negotiate less for them. If they negotiate their salary, they still risk receiving less than men or being considered “unpleasant” because they tried to negotiate and go against social norms.
