Essay / 1968 123rd Aviation Battalion - 736
The United States Army has seen many changes since its beginning in 1775, but it remains the largest and most disciplined volunteer fighting force in the world. Like service members past and present, many Army units have contributed to the success of our armed forces and, like these service members, many have been lost. Even if these units are not as well known as the divisions to which they belonged, they still enriched the history of our Army. The accomplishments of the 123rd Aviation Battalion have contributed to our nation's history and battle success. In 1968, the United States Army activated the 123rd Aviation Battalion, creating a remarkable unit comprised of several Army assets. The battalion design revolutionized how resources could be combined to accomplish numerous missions by mixing infantry, signals, aviation, and support units. The 123rd's mission was to collect intelligence, deliver supplies, insert and extract infantrymen, and provide air support. In addition to their primary mission, they also participated in medical evacuation, an invaluable asset on the battlefields of Vietnam. The 123rd Aviation Battalion was made up of several airframes, including the OH-23 Raven, OH-6 Cayuse, UH-1 Huey, AH-1 Cobra, and at one point even an attachment of CH -47 Chinook. According to the 123rd Aviation Battalion's resume, Companies A and B delivered more than 1,400 tons of cargo, destroyed 575 structures, killed more than 700 enemy combatants and provided medical evacuation of 114 people. All of these achievements took place in 1968, before receiving an attachment of CH-47 Chinooks. The reconnaissance aircraft provided intelligence either by flying over... middle of paper ...... a winged aircraft, someone decided to create such a mixture of elements to execute such a wide range of missions, it's truly remarkable. The members of the 123rd Aviation Battalion should be proud of the mission they accomplished and the lives they had while fighting in Vietnam. The history and achievements of the 123rd Aviation Battalion have brought great honor to the army and military aviation. Works Cited Center for Military History. (2008, September).
