Polyester manufacturing process. Production of polyester in the laboratory. Polyester is an example of condensation polymerization1. Condensation polymers are polymers formed by joining molecules together and which lose a small molecule such as water or methanol as a byproduct1. A polyester is made by reacting an acid with two -COOH groups and an alcohol with two -OH1 groups. In this particular case the acid is benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid also known as terephthalic acid and the alcohol used is ethane-1,2-diol also known as ethylene glycol1. Now this acid and this alcohol form continuous chains by aligning themselves alternately1. . This creates an ester bond between each acid group and alcohol group1. As they are condensation polymers, they lose a small molecule, in this case it is a water molecule1. Thus, for each ester bond formed, one water molecule is lost1. After the formation of this compound, then comes the polymerization step1. During the polymerization step, the compound produced is heated to a temperature of 260°C and at low pressure1. A catalyst is needed at this stage to speed up the reaction - there are many options for catalysts such as antimony(iii)oxide1. After this step, the polyester is formed and half of the ethane1,2-diol is restored and removed1. This is the final polyester also known as polyethylene terephthalate1. Production of polyester for manufacturing purposes. There is another method of producing polyester. This method is mainly used by manufacturers to produce polyester. The two basic forms of polyester produced are continuous yarn and staple fiber2. Filament yarn is a smooth surfaced fabric that is continuous in length and staple fiber are just threads cut into short lengths but...... middle of paper ...... may appear damp in weather hot3. It also lacks in appearance3.Finishing Process – They have a finishing process similar to that of a thread.Manufactures – These are the three main polyester manufacturers in the world3.EIdu Pont de Nemours Co.,Inc.Hoescht CelaneseBASFBiblography1 . “Polyesters – Terylene and PET.” Polyesters - Terylene and PET.
