Genetic EngineeringThis is the manipulation of the DNA or RNA of organisms to modify or improve the organism. The characteristics of the organism can be changed or new characteristics can be added via DNA. An organism's genes can be modified using biotechnology. This is why genetic engineering can be considered a form of biotechnology. Genes can be deleted, added, or turned off so that certain traits are expressed or repressed. This can be done with bacteria or proteins. The combinations of traits formed are new and cannot be found in nature, changing the composition of the organism, somehow creating a new species. Genetic engineering is used in agricultural medicine and forensic medicine. Genetically modified organisms are called GMOs. Examples: Designer babies: known as in-vertro fertilization. Using genetic engineering, scientists have found a way to help women who have difficulty getting pregnant have a baby. Fertilization takes place in the laboratory, outside the woman's body. The woman will undergo a process during which she will take hormonal medications. This medicine will produce many ovaries which will be collected and placed in laboratory dishes. Then the eggs are inseminated and fertilized. Only a few eggs are selected and transferred to the woman's womb to develop. Designer babies are when the genes of the fetus are changed to fit the characteristics of the parents' choice, creating the child of your dreams. Advantages and disadvantages In vitro fertilization has been around since the 70s and many people trust it because of its development. Even though this has many side effects on the mother's health, many people see it as beneficial. Hormonal drugs cause some problems to the woman and the whole pregnancy is delicate and fragile...... middle of paper ......who should decide how long a person should live?Conclusion:I believe that the Genetic engineering can be considered biotechnology if you believe in science. It's a way of trying to improve people's lives using cells/organisms. Agricultural medicine could benefit greatly when/if genetic engineering is deemed safe enough and overcomes risks and controversial issues. It uses technology and biological processes to improve organisms to form useful products. Biotechnology and genetic engineering are thus linked. Genetic engineering should fall under biotechnology. My opinion is that biotechnology should be further researched and used, but only to a certain extent. There are many edge cases and many improvements to be made. I believe that biotechnology explores and opens new avenues in biology that can definitely make a big difference in our changing world..
