Essay / Superconductors Essay - 536
The relatively new discovery of superconductors has the potential to become a revolutionary discovery that will have major impacts on key areas of society. Superconductors form when substances are cooled to extremely low temperatures, in which case electrons can flow freely without friction. Without friction, energy loss through the material is non-existent. Thanks to this property, electric current will have the ability to flow forever in a loop of superconducting substance. However, the temperature at which superconductivity is achieved is very difficult to achieve without expending excessive amounts of energy. The point at which superconductivity is reached is called the superconducting transition temperature; these temperatures are very low, making them difficult to reach. An unexpected discovery was that ceramics were capable of achieving superconductivity at significantly higher temperatures than metals. Originally discovered by JG Bednorz and KA Muller, ceramics achieved high temperature superconductivity, with the highest temperature recorded at 138 K, a temperature that...
