Like many others in my class, I left college and headed for the fast track of the world of law and finance. After two years of crunching numbers, juggling multi-million dollar real estate projects, and emerging relatively unscathed from Black Monday (October 1987), I realized I hated my job. Landing a teaching job at Fessenden School became a defining event in my life. Looking back over the last few years, I fully realize that teaching is an essential part of me. Whether it's creating a model of the Yangtze River Valley with lively 6th graders, discussing the importance of the Bill of Rights with exuberant 7th graders, or explaining the decline and fall of the Roman Empire to a noisy group of 9th graders, I love educating students.Michael Thompson once said, "There are some teachers who are effective and know why, others who are not and don't know why, and a third are effective but don't really know why. ยป After five years in Fessenden, I felt like the latter. So I decided to pursue higher education in order to become a more effective educator. Theory, internship and research aside, graduate studies were a revelation for me. It confirmed to me that leading a school was more than a choice; it was a calling.After graduating, I accepted a college job at Harvard-Westlake, where I quickly moved from the classroom to several different administrative roles. As a team leader for several years, I was responsible for overseeing the progress of 250 Year 7 students, supervising a team of eight Year 7 History teachers, which included assessing effectiveness of the program and teaching, and to report directly to the director of the college. and deputy director.
