This involved analyzing data from 90,000 individual surveys conducted by the Mexican Migration Project to establish the presence of social effects, and qualitative data analysis of 120 in-depth surveys. interviews with migrants and their family members in Mexico to reveal the underlying mechanisms. First, it confirmed the hypothesis that “having previous migrants in the household or community increases the likelihood that individuals will migrate, regardless of the effects of the economic and political context” (2013: 19). Second, through its qualitative research, the study found that strict immigration policies reduce, among other things, communication channels between migrants in the United States and their families in Mexico. The impact of this situation is a break in the feedback loop on what is often a difficult life as a migrant in the United States. In the context of increased border crossing restrictions, Garip and Asad (2013) argue that restricting these communication channels only perpetuates the myth of a glamorous life in the United States.
