Critique 2 Dementia interventionThe objective of this study (Eloniemi-Sulkava et al., 2009) was to analyze whether a care program based on multiple components, such as Peer support groups, exercise education, and geriatric assessment, among others, could delay the need to institutionalize dementia patients and extend their care into the community. At the same time, the authors study the impact that this program will have on the use and cost of social and health services used by the patients studied compared to usual care. The authors do not explicitly state the direction of the relationship between intervention and outcomes, although we can infer that they expect a benefit from the intervention. The included literature review suggests that prolonged home stay was achieved in similar studies that evaluated some of the components of the tested intervention as well as possible cost reduction. There is no theory identified in the article. The researchers conduct a thorough review of the literature and base their framework on previous studies and their own experience and critical observation of dementia patient care in the community. Methods The design chosen for this study is experimental. A randomized controlled trial is carried out over a period of two years. One of the inclusion criteria for this trial was being a couple in which one member cared for the other who had been diagnosed with dementia. Living at home in the Helsinki area was another condition. The diagnosis of dementia was clearly defined by a specialist and included medical imaging. Severity of illness had to be at least 1.0 on a dementia rating scale and no more than ...... middle of document ...... health care settings. References Crichton, N. (2002).
