Crime and Drug Cartels in Mexico-Crime in Mexico is one of the most urgent and serious concerns facing Mexico today . Crime statistics in Mexico show that even over the years the crime rate has decreased. Over the past 100 years or more, there has been a sharp increase in drug-related crimes, especially in recent decades (Tuckman). Currently, not all crimes are reported, so rates may be higher than statistics indicate. The government is not able to detect all of these violent and drug crimes that are happening across the country. The vast majority of these crimes are due to assault and theft. Mexico is known as the “gateway” to illicit goods and anything illegal; many criminals take advantage of it to the extreme. Numerous drug trafficking organizations have taken over the Mexican underworld, while other small groups traffic contraband (Tuckman). Seven in ten Mexican residents believe these horrific crimes and violence have changed the country forever. The Mexican government has been trying for some time to launch and intensify its efforts to combat crime while striving to build a stronger government and country. These crime and drug trafficking rates all began to skyrocket when Colombia shifted its trafficking routes from the Caribbean to Mexico in the early 1980s (Insight Crime). For many years, one of the main problems of the Mexican people, which is still relevant today, is that although approximately 80,000 armed forces try to prevent and combat these crimes, these forces are not doing enough to country.
