Essay / The Influences of Greek Mythology - 1177
The Influence of MythologyAncient myths form the foundation on which societies around the world rest. Ancient myths have a huge effect on human behavior because they are true stories that provide examples for the believer within a given society. Every society has its own myth, or several myths that serve as guides to help the community establish purpose, meaning, and a sense of direction. Two ancient societies are famous for their mythology. These societies are Greece and Rome. Ancient Greece and Roman societies collapsed over 1,000 years ago, but despite this; their mythology continues to influence our culture today. Science, modern language, the arts, industry and culture all demonstrate the influence of Greek and Roman mythology. Major industries maintain Roman and Greek myths through the names of their companies and products. Amazon.com, a leading website, takes its name from a mythical group of women considered wise warriors (Greek mythology). The god of music is the namesake of New York's popular Music Hall, the Apollo Theater. Nike, the winged Greek goddess of victory, was chosen to represent one of the most famous brands of modern times. Venus, goddess of love and beauty, is a beauty product well known to women. Ajax was acquired from the hero of Homer's famous Iliad (Greek mythology). Pandora is another mythological name widely used by businesses. Pandora jewelry for example and more recently the Pandora personal radio are just a few examples. Pandora was the first mortal woman in Greek mythology and her name means all gifted. Pandora's Box is a box that contained all the evils of the world and, once opened, all the evils were unleashed. The only thing left inside the box was hope. In everyday life we encounter examples of words, businesses and products, as well as literary works, planets and constellations that were adopted from classical Greek and Roman.
