Essay / To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee - 1009
The Modern Spirit of a Pioneer ManCourage is something that lives in each of us. However, many do not use this virtue. Many let the aspect of fear get in the way of their courage and fortitude. However, throughout the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird, Atticus Finch dares to take "the road not taken" and has the mind of a modern man living during the Great Depression. Atticus is a valuable lawyer in the novel and is an inspirational role model to his children and many others in Maycomb County. We see Atticus taking the road that the others have not taken; when he defends Tom Robinson, thus proving that he puts others before himself and especially when he uses teaching methods and values immensely different from those of other people. In the novel, Atticus defends an individual of color in a racist and sexist society. He readily accepts the responsibility of defending Tom Robinson; a man accused of raping and abusing a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Atticus accepts the label of "nigger lover" and takes the case knowing that he will lose no matter how hard he tries to succeed. His simple goal is that he can stand with dignity in front of Jem and Scout and be a good role model. Atticus says, "I wanted you to see what true courage is... You rarely win, but sometimes you do." (p. 149) By saying this he means that it is not always about winning something, losing can also be beneficial. In this situation, Atticus also shows how he takes a path that many others would not have taken: everyone would want to hear that he or she won the case instead of losing in front of the jury and everyone who came see. Living in the racist and prejudiced society of Maycomb, Atticus knows that people will believe a white person over a black person because... middle of paper ...... by this he means that he does not serve there's no point in hiding anything. , children, if they ask you a question, answer it honestly. Thus, Atticus's teaching methods are extremely different from those of other people such as the Radleys, Cunninghams, etc. In conclusion, Atticus demonstrates commendable courage and behavior, in many cases, throughout the story by taking the path not taken. Not by fighting or killing, but by standing up for what he believed in; in a civilized and determined manner. His biggest motivation; however, they were his children. He is unique from others in taking this route of defending a black man, putting people before himself and his teaching methods are different. Atticus made many changes to Jem and Scout and was a great role model. He wants to live without regrets, and for him, that's the only way to say that you truly lived..
