That's about 1 in 5,000 babies, which is not uncommon, but rare enough for it to be seen in children. Most are born prematurely, but are often born naturally without any surgical intervention on the mother. The good news is that it can be detected as early as 14 weeks of pregnancy. Regular checkups and regular ultrasounds are important to ensure that the organs are developing properly. It is also important to ensure that the hole the organs are passed through does not close too tightly. At this point, childbirth may become necessary for the health and safety of mother and baby. Additionally, just because one baby is born with gastroschisis doesn't mean others to follow are more likely to develop it, according to different studies.....
