Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease involves a series of infections that occur in the gum tissues of the mouth and around the teeth. Some infections cause simple inflammation of the gum tissue and, in some cases, cause damage to soft tissue and bone, as well as the risk of tooth loss. Periodontal disease could be prevented if people were better informed about how to maintain healthy gums and teeth. People also need to understand that the way you live your lifestyle can also have an effect on your health when it comes to oral hygiene. As you must know, our mouths are full of bacteria, not to mention mucus and other particles. When you don't clean your teeth and gums daily, bacteria, mucus, and particles build up to become plaque. Brushing and flossing daily removes this plaque buildup. If you choose not to brush your teeth daily and floss, plaque hardens and becomes more tartar on the teeth.
