PERCEPTION AND INDIVIDUAL DECISION MAKING.An employee does unsatisfactory work on an assigned project. Explain the attribution process that this person's manager will use to make judgments about this employee's job performance.SummaryIndividuals behave in a given way based not on the actual state of their external environment, but rather of what they see or believe it to be. An organization can spend millions of dollars to create a pleasant working environment for its employees. However, despite these expenses, if an employee feels that the work assigned to him is bad and does not seem satisfactory to him, that employee will behave accordingly. It is the employee's perception of a situation that becomes the basis of his behavior. . The employee who perceives their supervisor as a barrier reducer who helps them do better work and the employee who views the same supervisor as a "big brother, closely watching their every move." The difference has nothing to do with the reality of the supervisor's actions; the difference in employee behavior is due to different perceptions.Person Perception: Making Judgments About Employee PerformanceAttribution TheoryAttribution theory suggests that when we observe an individual's behavior, we attempt to determine whether it was caused internally or externally. largely on three factors: distinctiveness, consensus and consistency. Our perceptions of people differ from our perceptions of inanimate objects. We make inferences about the actions of people that we do not make about inanimate objects. People have beliefs, motivations or intentions. Attribution theory suggests that when we observe an individual's behavior, we try to determine whether it is due to an internal or external cause. This determination depends largely on three factors:1. Distinctive character2. Consensus3. ConsistencyBehaviors of internal origin are those that are believed to be within the personal control of the individual. Externally originated behavior is considered to result from external causes; that is, the person is seen as having been forced into this behavior by the situation. Distinctiveness refers to whether an individual displays different behaviors in different situations. What we want to know is whether the observed behavior is unusual. If so, the observer is likely to give the behavior an external attribution. If this action is not unusual, it will likely be judged as internal. Consensus occurs if everyone who faces a similar situation reacts in the same way. If consensus were high, you would be expected to make an external attribution for the employee's tardiness, whereas if other employees who took the same route arrived at work on time, your conclusion as to causal link would be internal..
