All students participating in this project were freshmen in their first semester at State University, and almost all came directly from high school. All but one had studied abroad for periods ranging from a year to, in one case, their entire lives. Only one student had his entire educational experience in Japan, but even that student mostly attended an international school in Japan. So this was a very, very diverse group in terms of international experience, as the chart above shows, since there is a map icon for each country in which a student has spent at least a year as a student. This information came from a classroom survey while I was giving a presentation about this class and these students to the broader ELA community as part of the Summer Teacher Retreat program. The students themselves were at the very top of the English proficiency range at the state. University level and almost native, some of them indeed spoke English better than Japanese and many had a third or fourth language. As for their English, they all scored 650 or above on their TOEFL entrance test, and they also all did very well in their personal interviews with ELA teachers before being selected for stream 1. AS they all spent time in English speaking countries or schools. it was not surprising, in fact, 9 of the students came from the same class from the ICU high school next to my university and just opposite the ELA building. As with the ICU undergraduate student body in general, the gender composition of the class was approximately 65% female and 35% male, as there were 8 males and 14 females.
