The 1930s to 1940s were a volatile period filled with misfortune and difficulty for America. After serving just one term, incompetent President Herbert Hoover was removed from office and replaced by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt faced many adversities during his term, both domestic and foreign. Faced with a country plunged into a deep depression and a world war, Roosevelt proved to be a capable and competent leader. Despite some mistakes during his term, Roosevelt demonstrated his ability to take action and accomplish what needed to be done. Franklin Delano Roosevelt receives a rating of 7 out of 10 for his effectiveness in office and his prowess as president. After having a relatively indecisive president for the past several years, America desperately needed a president who could take charge of the government. Franklin Roosevelt was more than ready to turn around the spiraling American economy. Almost immediately after his inauguration, Roosevelt declared a four-day national "holiday" to try to prevent the banking system from collapsing. Roosevelt succeeded in getting Congress to pass the Emergency Banking Act, which gave him “broad discretionary powers over all banking and foreign exchange transactions” (Faragher, Buhle, Czitrom, and Armitage, 855). This measure made it possible to inspect banks and ensure that they were healthy before they reopened. Roosevelt wanted to restore confidence in the banking system after a widespread and disastrous bank failure. This shows how Roosevelt was much more decisive than his predecessor and got to work immediately after taking office. Another extraordinary task that Roosevelt was able to accomplish was to restore confidence in the federal government. The fact that ...... middle of paper ...... and savings. The order has since been rescinded and civil liberties laws have been passed to prevent future civil rights violations. Despite the many strides Roosevelt made in helping America recover from the Depression, these setbacks significantly hindered progress. Franklin Roosevelt was overall an effective president, although he made some major mistakes during his administration. Without Roosevelt, the Great Depression could have lasted much longer. Roosevelt's New Deal created jobs for millions and brought relief to struggling farmers. Roosevelt's public works projects and water policies improved the standard of living in underdeveloped rural areas. For the first time in American history, the government took responsibility for helping citizens. Under Roosevelt's leadership, America was able to recover from the Great Depression and become an economic superpower..
