The husband first observes Julius eating, as if it were some sort of entertainment, and then describes him as eating with relish, leading readers to assume that he takes so much joy just from eating a ham. Until Julius eats the ham and eats it, that's what completely captivates his attention and he looks at it lovingly as if it were something beautiful. Then the husband even goes so far as to ask Julius, “Was the mustard so strong that it moved you to tears?” (p. 124).
