More than eighty percent of teenagers use cell phones and computers, making it the most common form of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can be very damaging to adolescents: it can lead to anxiety, depression and even suicide. Cyberbullying Facts indicate that nearly seventy-five cases of cyberbullying take place on social media (www.stopbullying.gov). Sometimes cyberbullying can be easy to spot, such as if your child shows you a text, tweet, or response to a Facebook status update that is mean or cruel. Others are less obvious, like impersonating a victim online or posting personal information, photos, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass another person. Some children report that a fake account, web page, or online persona was created for the sole purpose of harassing and intimidating. Cyberbullying can be particularly traumatic for victims because it can reach victims in their homes, where they typically feel safest. With access to social media and the internet, victims often feel like there is no way to escape cyberbullying. Some victims of cyberbullying avoid school and sometimes show a lack of interest in social activities.
