Essay / Overview of The Unredeemed Captive by John Demos - 1408
The Unredeemed Captive tells the story of the struggles a family went through to remain faithful to each other. Eunice Williams was captured and her family went through many obstacles trying to bring her home. Eunice and her family were captured along with many other townspeople during the Deerfield Massacre of 1704. The demos accurately described the Deerfield Raid as well as the process of traveling to Canada. Throughout the book, Demos also covered some individual experiences and events in captivity. The demos showed Eunice's life before her life was changed and what she would be like if she wasn't taken away. He explained why the raid had happened the way it did and demonstrated its success. The story began with the change of a small frontier town. “Harvest finished. First frost. The valley ablaze with autumn colors: reds and yellows on the sides (along the forested ridges of the East Mountain and the lower hills to the west), green of the meadows in between” (Demos 11). The French began planning this raid in early 1703 and the New England town of Deerfield was finally attacked on February 29, 1704 and everything seemed to change. The village, as calm as possible, remained still while the attackers completed their preparation. Most of the city was sacked, ravaged and burned. Many houses were attacked, some in specific ways. Some residents were massacred and scalped, and only the luckiest managed to escape. For many others, those less fortunate were imprisoned and brought back to New France in Canada. The motivation for the attack was to capture prominent Deerfield pastor John Williams. They thought he would make a good trade for a French captain named Jean Baptiste Guyon who was a pirate held hostage by the English. The night of the attack...... middle of paper ...... would be considered fact or fiction. I didn't see any weakness throughout the book. I thought it was an easy read and enjoyed it. The Unredeemed Captive was a very interesting story. John Demos created this story to inform about what happened in the past. I learned the story of the raid on Deerfield in 1704. The importance of not only the dangerous journey these captives endured, but also the story of one child, Eunice Williams. She had to give herself up with the other Native American captures and continue her life in the wild. I have seen the relationships between many tribes build and fall while listening to the story of a family torn apart over many decades. Things happen in life; it's not about what happens, but how you react to it. Works Cited Demos, John. The Unredeemed Captive: A Family History of Early America. New York: Vintage, 1994. Print.
