  • Essay / Legalization of euthanasia - 1377

What to do when the end is near and suffering and pain are the only way forward? In the United States, we could respond to their needs by saying "oh no, poor people, I hope they get better", what if they don't get better? What if they just hoped that death would end their suffering? Euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide would do just that. However, physician-assisted suicide is illegal in America and is only legal in Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Vermont. In America, life is highly valued and praised. In the United States, healthcare is one of the most important fields and new drugs and treatments are constantly being invented. However; when we talk about life and its importance, we must not forget the different components of a complete life. Life is made up of physical, physiological and spiritual well-being. Keeping someone alive against their own will is tantamount to denying them the right to peace and forcing them to suffer a long period of needless misery. One of the issues when deciding whether euthanasia should be legalized or not is the quality of palliative care and the suffering of the patient at the end of life. Another question is the validity of the Hippocratic Oath; can we still trust a doctor? Is the Hippocratic Oath really there to provide patients with the best care they can receive from their doctor? Finally, there is the right to die, the debate over whether a patient has the right to decide to die. So, should someone who has been sentenced to death continue to live and suffer for the rest of their days? The fact that euthanasia is illegal and remains illegal supports this idea. Euthanasia should be legalized; this would eliminate the pain and suffering of many people who suffer from terminal illnesses....... middle of document ......ightingale Alliance, nd Web.
