  • Essay / A Look at Earthquakes - 1362

EarthquakesGeologists today define an earthquake as the shaking and shaking of the earth's surface, known as the ground. Earthquakes are caused by a sudden release of energy, usually due to faults that involve movements of rocks along a fraction. All of this energy has been building up for a long period of time and then suddenly explodes. Most earthquakes result from the release of energy along plate boundaries and, as such, "earthquakes are a manifestation of the dynamic nature of the Earth, of the fact that the Earth is a planet active internally. planet” (Hough). After an earthquake, continued adjustments along a fault can then generate a series of earthquakes. These earthquakes are called aftershocks. Aftershocks can be as large, destructive, and damaging as the first earthquake that occurred, or they can be less destructive for not even knowing it happened. An earthquake is one of the scariest and most destructive circumstances of nature on planet Earth. Earthquakes are also scarier when they start. This is due to the fact of the unknown. You have no idea how long the earthquake lasted or how violent it was. Earthquakes can be very destructive in many ways. “Collapsing buildings cause by far the majority of deaths, but the destruction is often compounded by mudslides, fires, floods, or tsunamis” (National Geographic par. 3). They can kill one person up to a hundred thousand people. Loss of life can be avoided through emergency planning, education, and building buildings that wobble rather than break in an earthquake. More than 900,000 earthquakes occur each year, of which more than 31,000 are strong enough to be felt. Earthquakes ... middle of paper ......driving when one hits, take your car out of traffic, stop driving and enter an open space. After all the devastating destruction is over, there are a few things you need to check. Check for fire or fire hazards, also check for the smell of gas and turn off all electricity. And most importantly, go back to your layout plans that you made before, go to your safe place and stay there. As I said before, your supplies and what you need will vary depending on where you live and how often earthquakes occur in your area. Of course, living here in Georgia, we may not need all the food supplies and other things, but we should know what to do during an earthquake. Knowing all this information about earthquakes can help save lives. This can raise awareness about how earthquakes occur, their effects when they occur, how to prepare for them, and what to do in the event of an end result...
