Almost every year a hurricane hits Florida and wreaks havoc on business, industry and affects the lives and dollars of the company and its workers. One might ask, “How can we prevent this from happening again?” » This is usually the question businesses and people affected by a hurricane ask. And a hospital? How would a hospital prepare for a hurricane? To complicate matters further, how would a hospital prepare for a hurricane if it had to operate 24 hours a day? This is the question that Pierre, Keith, Carol, Getta and James proposed. In order to address this type of question, our group had to conduct research. We had to develop a research process. We decided to use the hierarchical management-research model as the basis of our research. The initial research conducted was informative. The informational research aimed to find out how other hospitals respond to a hurricane. The problem with this type of research was that a hospital would not have a specific plan in the event of a hurricane. We had to change our informational vision. In other words, we have expanded our search category. A hurricane is considered a disaster. To be precise, it is a natural disaster. So we all searched for “How a Hospital Prepares for a Natural Disaster.” Bingo, we found many resources regarding hospitals and how they prepare for these types of incidents. The first article was titled “Hospital Disaster Preparedness: Meeting a Demand or Preparing for the Worst?” » (Paul V. Richter [PVR], 1997). This article detailed a disaster hospital plan in West Columbia, South Carolina. The article was written as a basic manual that all hospitals must follow. It was submitted to the South Carolina Hospital Association as a guide. A lot of things are explained in this article. It explains in detail how the different departments of a medical establishment should handle disastrous situations. Next we need to find specific data regarding hurricanes. Hurricanes cause major disasters in the region, as they do every year. While searching the Internet, we found a website that explained the years in which hurricanes occurred and the extent to which the hurricane caused destruction. The article was titled “MODIFIED BUILDING CLASSIFICATIONS FOR A HURRICANE LOSS ESTIMATION MODEL” (Makola M. Abdullah, Shealy C. Gross, Terri R. Norton, G. Dale Wesson [MMASCGTRNGDW], 2005). This article was designed with data in mind describing in detailed tables and graphs how buildings are prepared and constructed to withstand hurricanes..
