    All cancers have a genetic basis. It is triggered by mutations in a cell's genes which then cause the cell to reproduce abnormally. Many of these genetic changes are caused by random mutations during cell division. It only takes one mutating cell to cause cancer. There are no warning symptoms of cancer and only five to ten percent of all cancers are caused by parents passing genetic mutations to their children. The others are caused by environmental changes (Douglas). Cancer directly affects the lives of approximately 13.7 million Americans. In 2014 alone, it is estimated that there will be 1,665,540 patients diagnosed with cancer (Jones). Of these people, 43,250 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer (Douglas). 585,720 Americans are expected to die from cancer in 2014, or nearly 1,600 people per day. Cancer has become the second leading cause of death in the United States. It represents 1 in 4 deaths despite a survival rate of 80 to 90% for oral cancer (Jones). Although doctors don't always know why one person is more susceptible to oral cancer than another, they do know that oral cancer is not contagious. There is no known form of cancer that is contagious. There are certain risk factors that make some people more likely than others to develop cancer (Jones). Oral cancer is very dangerous because it is usually not noticed by the patient at an early stage. Human papillomavirus is a common viral infection that has become a significant risk factor. Anyone who is sexually active is at risk of contracting this disease; although there is a vaccine to prevent it. Once a person has HPV, they are at greater risk of developing genital warts and cervical cancer (CDC). It is important for people to consider their risks of developing oral cancer and whether they have a family history of it. They need to understand that there are environmental factors around them that they can avoid to ensure they live as long and healthy a life as possible.
