  • Essay / Essay on Religion in Malaysia - 1120

I disagree with Dostoyevsky who said that the Church itself has become so worldly that it is no longer Christian. In my opinion, people who still practice this religion because they want to show their belief to the public and this is one of the ways to influence or make others believe what they believe. For example, Christians organize Christmas carols and a Christmas parade every year. People are born with a curious character. When nonbelievers are exposed to a belief, they will be curious about that belief and will therefore want to know more about certain beliefs. As they learn about this particular religion, most of them will agree and begin to believe in it. Therefore, they are more likely to become believers than others. To avoid any racial issues, non-Muslims such as Buddhists, Christians and Hindus are also allowed to practice their religious activities in public. Article 11 of the Malaysian Constitution provides that every person has the right to profess and practice his religion and (subject to applicable laws restricting the spread of other religions to Muslims) to propagate it. The Constitution also provides that Islam is the religion of the country but that other religions can be practiced in peace and harmony (article 3). One of the best things about Malaysia is that we have many holidays throughout the year. For example, on Wesak Day, Buddhists across the country pray at temples across the country to pay homage to Buddha by commemorating his birth, death and enlightenment on this day. In Thaipusam, Hindus pay homage to Lord Muruga and celebrate for over two to three days with drums and music played throughout the day and sometimes late into the night. On Christmas Eve, Christians organize a Christmas parade of different churches and denominations in some places in Malaysia. This is, however, a controversial issue. People are allowed to practice their religion but are not allowed to share it with a Muslim. The government enforces laws to protect Muslims because Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country even though it is a secular country. There have been many cases in Malaysia where a group of Muslims held a public speech on “Jesus was a prophet”. Personally, I don't think it is appropriate to publicly criticize another religion as a weapon to sow confusion and a method to convert people. This can cause chaos and conflict among people. Honestly, I sometimes find it a little unfair that the government has taken no action regarding the prosecution of Christians by Muslims. There was a case where Christians were forbidden to
