  • Essay / The Wiz Musical Analysis - 721

The Wiz as a MusicalThe Wiz is a musical comedy/film released in 1978 that was an adaptation of the popular film "The Wizard of Oz". It included several very popular stars of the time, including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell. The film takes place in New York, where the main character, Dorothy, is suddenly swept away by a tornado in the middle of a snowstorm. She later found herself lost in a town she had no idea about and was curious about how she could get home. After meeting 3 other characters on his journey who share similarities, they all embark on a journey to OZ to solve each of their problems. Throughout the film, the characters provide their own soundtrack, singing songs in harmony that complement the mood of each scene. After Dorothy is swept away by a tornado, she then lands in a strange place she has never seen before. It was an old playground that had been deserted after the munchkins (children) were glued to the walls. When Dorothy landed, she killed the Wicked Witch by accident, not realizing that she was the one who stuck the munchkins to the wall. All the munchkins were grateful and made sure Dorothy knew what a great deed she had just done. Later in the scene, the munchkins sang and danced to a song called "He's the Wizard", which described who The Wiz was and how he could help her get home. They danced in sync as they played in the playground, all of their voices harmonizing as well. They pointed her in the right direction and she started to walk forward, but when she turned around to ask another question, they were gone. She then started singing a song that described how all she wanted to do was go home and go back to where she belonged. Although this was filmed as a movie and not an act...... middle of paper...... Not all witches had very detailed wardrobes. Particularly the witch Evillene, who was evil, had a dress similar to the size of a wedding dress made of old and dirty jewelry. Glinda the Good Witch had a dress that was also made of jewels but they were shiny and pleasing to the eye opposite to Evillene's dress. Overall, The Wiz demonstrated several real-life aspects with a sense of exaggeration and fictional characters. The singing, dancing, wardrobe and setting all contributed to making this a well-developed musical. It had the standards of a typical musical, but the soul of the music and the characters gave it a different spin. Initially, The Wiz was just a musical performed in theaters, but when it moved to the film version, its success was even greater. The Wiz does not have any live performances at the moment but his company is still operational.
