Hamlet's Fatal ErrorWhen you play a role or role to disguise your true character, it ends up harming you. Hamlet's ancient disposition was a tragic mistake on his part as it ultimately led to his demise. Hamlet displays an ancient disposition to deceive Claudius, although Claudius is the only character who does not allow himself to be deceived. When Hamlet refuses Ophelia his love, she goes mad and commits suicide. Hamlet no longer knows whether he is mad or not. For these reasons, Hamlet's decision to describe an ancient disposition is a tragic error. When Hamlet found out that Claudius had killed his father, Hamlet was furious and set to work on how to avenge his father. Hamlet got to work hatching a plan to act crazy in order to hide the truth from Claudius, that Hamlet was going to kill Claudius. Hamlet is not so lucky. Claudius does not believe Hamlet's attempt to claim that he is crazy. "It wasn't like madness. There is something in his soul" (III; I; 161). This means that Claudius does not believe that Hamlet is crazy, but rather that he has some sort of plan in the works. Claudius also has a plan which involves killing Hamlet. This is ironic because in the end, Claudius is ultimately murdered by Hamlet. Hamlet must act like a fool if he wants Claudius to believe him, so Hamlet uses his confrontations with Ophelia to show this. Ophelia is manipulated by Hamlet for his personal gain. Hamlet uses Ophelia to spread the word that he is mad in the kingdom. It's sad because Ophélie is innocent and she ends up committing suicide. One of the ways Hamlet tricks Ophelia into thinking he is crazy is by scaring her. (II; I; 75). “I was so scared.” Hamlet makes Ophelia believe he is crazy by killing Polonius behind a curtain in Gertrude's room. This incident drives Ophelia crazy and leads her to commit suicide. Hamlet spends much of his time pretending to be crazy, and he begins to believe that he really is crazy. Hamlet feels like he's losing control when he sees his father's ghost in Gertrude's chambers. Every other time the ghost appeared, someone else saw it too, but this time his mother didn't see him..
