Computer crimes go by different names and can include hate crimes, telemarketing and Internet fraud, identity theft, and credit card account theft. These are considered cybercrimes when the illegal activities are committed through the use of a computer and the Internet. It is very difficult to assess the amount of damage and/or financial losses resulting from computer crimes. Often, the victim does not even know that they have been targeted or even that they are a victim. Those who realize they are victims of a computer crime often do not report it to authorities or have any way of knowing what led them to become victims in the first place. There are a wide variety of computer crimes, many ways they work, and how they affect both computers and the lives of the people they target. The Department of Justice categorizes computer crime in three ways: computer as target, computer as weapon, and computer as accessory. Computer as a target involves attacking other people's computers. The personal computer is the simplest and most common target of computer crime. Many people have high-speed Internet access and leave their computers on all the time. This allows hackers to log into the computer and find a way to obtain not only personal information such as credit card numbers and bank account information. Intruders also want your computer's resources, that is, your hard drive space, fast processor, and Internet connection. They use these resources to attack other computers on the Internet. In fact, the more computers an intruder uses, the harder it is for law enforcement to determine where the attack actually came from. (para 2)Many people think they are safe if they do not have personal financial information on their computer, they do not realize that their computer is being used to target hundreds of other people and that these hundreds of other people's computers are then used to target hundreds of others. One of the quickest ways to target a computer is with a virus.
