Essay / The Power of In Othello - 797
Looking at Act 1 Scene 1, lines 86-87, Iago uses the image of an old black ram mating with a white ewe to describe how Desdemona ran away with Othello. Iago uses these words to create a vulgar image regarding Brabanzio's daughter to evoke his anger so that he will react irrationally. The words Iago uses reveal a racial stigma he has towards Othello, but they are also used as a foreshadowing technique in regards to Othello's insecurities. Because of the words and images used, it becomes clear that words have power over all the characters and their actions in Othello. In the play we see themes of love, deception, feminism, etc. manifest in the form of words. These words will then show us later the extent of their influence on the characters, particularly with regard to life and death. Emilia and Desdemona both die because of the words that were spoken, Emilia dies because she tells the truth and Desdemona dies because of the lies told.
