Essay / Various Emotions and Struggles: A Teenager's Journey is an example from the text that gives the reader insight into the emotions and suspense Rainsford feels. However, as previously stated, Rainsford is well educated and knowledgeable about the outdoors as he is a big game hunter. Rainsford finds himself thrown into a one-sided game with a madman; this in itself is a reason why emotion plays an important role in the entire plot of any story. Rainsford may have felt demoralized due to the inequality of the match. At first, Rainsford sticks to his gut and tries to refuse the game, but General Zaroff forcefully persuades him to engage by telling him that "the game is worth playing" (Connell 23), which can be considered a threat. Zaroff's information really forces Rainsford to perform, because as Rainsford and the audience can see, Zaroff is obviously a fool and won't just let Rainsford go once the opportunity presents itself. The emotion that Rainsford feels, stuck in a corner with only one solution that is the last thing one wants to do, can be associated with any human being, whether through a similar event or through any other comparable experience. As the hunt ends, Rainsford is praised for his skills and instincts by General Zaroff, but due to the last three days of isolation, Rainsford has become a breed of madman himself and tells Zaroff that he is “a beast at bay” (Connell 34). The deed is accomplished and the final battle is over, Rainsford is victorious, not only in the game, but also in the conflict between him and Zaroff. Rainsford claims Zaroff's possessions and territory like a wild animal claims its territory. Not only does this story use a classic theme, but it also creates a hybrid of its own.
