  • Essay / Gender Roles In Othello - 1549

Bianca, Desdemona and Emilia, the three main women in the play, demonstrate the struggle for male dominance and the problems of societal stereotypes of classifying and limiting female roles. At first glance, powerful women appear shy, loving, and willing to care for and help their independent husbands. However, when explored in a deeper sense, women can be described as capable, having a sense of self, and possessing attributes that qualify them as much more than housewives, young girls, and objects; Bianca, Desdemona and Emilia are described as individuals who allow themselves to share a part of themselves with men who underestimate their abilities and who have deeper feelings.
