  • Essay / The Effect of Penn State's Roommate Selection Options...

Introduction: In 2013, Penn State experienced a 1.6% increase in student enrollment. This year, Penn State's University Park welcomed 46,184 new students. Our research examines the class of incoming freshmen and the options available to them in order to choose a roommate. These options include random selection, in which the university will randomly assign people to live together; Facebook, where students can search for roommates themselves, or choose friends from home to live with. We wanted to study the effect of each of these options and see how each affected the roommate's friendship. Does living with someone from home automatically mean the friendship will continue to develop, or does it cause more problems? Similarly, does random roommate assignment have a negative effect on student friendship, or if not, what are the benefits? We wanted to study this issue because we thought it would benefit students who were going to have to go through the roommate selection process. We wanted to further research the most effective selection option when it came to becoming friends with the roommate. Literature Review Our literature review included six scientific articles that were studies done on students who were going to the university. The first article we found was about the importance of communication when it comes to making friends. McEwan and Guerrero (2010) discussed the benefits of communicating before getting to know someone. We based our questions on this article regarding communication in order to learn about interactions between roommates. Another important article for our research by Canavello & Crocker (2010) also helped us create a middle of paper. ....oommate, there is no right answer. Works Cited Canevello, A. and Crocker, J.
