Although Severus Snape does not act out of charity for most of the story and murders Dumbledore, we learn that he is a "good" character. "Snape is motivated by his deep and abiding love Lily, Harry's mother." (McDougal 161). Thanks to this love, Snape follows Dumbledor's orders, kills him and becomes the hero of the story. Severus' last name, Snape, exactly represents the symbolic dualism between "good" and "evil". Lord Voldemort represents "evil" throughout the series. The Dark Lord is even compared to Hitler (Wente 89). Voldemort's wish for immortality and his drive to achieve rule over the magical world through terror can also be read into his name "Voldemort" (Croft 159). The lack of human emotions such as sympathy and compassion, his selfish actions, and the fact that he is unrepentant towards the many people he kills, lead to the conclusion that Lord Voldemort represents "evil" to towards Christian.
