  • Essay / An icebreaker interview with a visitor from mainland China

I have been prejudiced towards visitors from mainland China, like many Hong Kong residents. There is news that they behave inappropriately during their visits every week. They engaged in many uncivilized behaviors, such as ignoring the rules everywhere and peeing in public. After an interview with a visitor from mainland China, Mr. Lee, I realize that this may be a stereotype and that it must be put an end to in order to have less conflicts among the Chinese and a harmonious society. Before having the interview, I asked some Hong Kong teenagers about their opinions towards mainland Chinese. Most of them don't like them and think they are unsanitary, uncivilized and rude, as I do. This shows that many teenagers in Hong Kong might have the same view as mine. They said they didn't like mainland Chinese even though they had never visited mainland China. So how come they can pass judgment? One reason is that our thinking is influenced by the media and the general public. We've heard from the media about a lot of inappropriate behavior by mainland Chinese. And the general public has organized many protests and campaigns against mainland Chinese. They felt that their interests are affected by different means, such as education and social protection, which will also affect ours. That's why more and more people hate them. I want to know their views on us, but it's just hard to find a mainland Chinese willing to agree to the interview. After several hours, I finally found an interviewee. Lee is a visitor living in Guangzhou; This is his first time visiting Hong Kong. He was not willing to agree to my interview until I told him it was a duty. The reason is that he was told that Hong Kong people feel like they are in the middle of paper... Chinese, our history, our technology and our institutional network are different. We have been ruled by the British so our culture has been affected by British culture and we also have more advanced technology and different education. It is therefore true that we are better educated and have a better standard of living than some Chinese. It is inappropriate to have prejudices and stereotypes about other cultures. We should tolerate the differences between cultures and try to understand them better through various methods like searching on the internet and talking directly with them. We need to demonstrate intercultural competence during the conversation to avoid bad feelings from both of us. We should not behave rudely and show hatred towards other people's cultures. We must respect others; respect other cultures in order to have a better and harmonious society.
