Essay / Yellow or Gold: The Great Gatsby - 732
Colors are something to be determined, not just colors, they mean many things depending on how people analyze them. Colors are important in life, not only in life but also in books. A book that really describes this is The Great Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, colors represent many different things. One of the main colors is yellow and gold. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald describes these colors and associates them with different things. For example, gold represents true wealth and yellow represents false gold. Fitzgerald associates colors with different things by describing them in depth. For example, the green light at Daisy's is just a green light, but Fitzgerald made it so much more than that and that's what made The Great Gatsby such a great novel. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald deeply associates yellow and gold with different things. In life, people sometimes make bad decisions and do bad things to make money. Very similar to the novel, where Jay Gatsby earns money through bad ways, when he could have earned it through good ways. In the novel, when it comes to appearance, gold represents wealth, while yellow is less rich. For example, on page 44 there is this quote. It sounds like this: "Now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music." This quote makes sense because if it said, “Now the orchestra is playing golden cocktail music,” it would have seemed bolder or even more elegant. Compared to yellow, which seems a little less classy. “Yellow cocktail music” sounds like boring music in an elevator, whereas if it was “golden cocktail music” people would think of someone who can afford to have a good band to come play and which tastes good. It feels good... middle of paper ... because he likes it and fake money will never win against real money, in other words, yellow will never win against gold . Also, Gatsby didn't get this car with real money, but by selling moonshine. Therefore, when Tom says that it was Gatsby's fault, it would add even more complications to the problem because he killed a woman and sold moonshine. This is what killed Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, colors can really help to better understand the novel. Indeed, if there is a slight change in color, then there is a big change in context. The meaning of a color isn't going to be clear and concise, it's up to us to figure out what it means in context. Colors are something to be determined, they are not just colors, they can mean many things depending on how people analyze them. This is what makes The Great Gatsby one of the books of American literature.
