Essay / 20th Century American Literature - 1371
The country as it was in the early 20th century was shaped in an effort to regenerate and recover from World War I, the Great Depression, and numerous other socially paralyzing disruptions. that forever changed the United States in different ways. Some changes were good, others not so good. The spirit of loyalty and patriotism was alive and thriving in the air and in the hearts of everyone, and the literature of this period greatly reflects the influence which this surge of patriotism had on the American people. Regionalism and the regional consciousness that accompanied it are greatly reflected in many of the works we have read. Most of the authors, including poets, that we have studied have touched on many of the same topics that we think about when thinking about our heritage and our nation's history, and how that history has helped shape the country we have today. Two of the main social values that were visibly addressed were loyalty and our ability to selflessly sacrifice something that meant a lot to the characters in the works, whether it be a sense of self, a lover, etc. ahead. The short story "Editha" by WD Howells is a very clear representation of the idea of loyalty, while encompassing everything that represents the concept of regionalism at its best. The main character Editha pressures her love interest George to fight in a war that neither he nor anyone in his family deems fair and just, but is carried away by the fury of the region in which Editha lived. "... contemporary with the growth of war sentiment, she had been intrigued by his lack of seriousness about it. He seemed to despise it even more than...... middle of paper ...... the personification fog "The fog is coming over the little cat. feet" shows how a natural event in nature can provide an example of how the world works. The people in it are stealthy, etc. Finally in "Grass", when he says "I am the grass". Let me work.", he talks about how we use something as simple as burial to cover up our mistakes in history and all the things we do that we're not so proud of. We use our relationship with nature in many areas. bad manners by polluting the world, building in all open spaces, etc. Regionalism and naturalism are evident in all areas of literature, especially in the period we have studied. All the authors really showed how our relationships with our environment extend to the world. the world and its influence on us and our influence on it disappears, and also with the way we treat nature and everything comes back to us.
