    Beauty pageants have negative impacts both on those who participate in them and on women in general. Some may say that women participating in beauty pageants can feel good about themselves. However, the overwhelming evidence against this claim proves that beauty pageants also lower the self-esteem of those who participate in them and those who watch them. This can have major consequences in society regarding the status of women. There are some positive aspects of beauty pageants. For example, a positive message can be sent to candidates. One person notes that she gained her independence and self-confidence through beauty pageants (Sutton). Another, named Britney Leather, focused on changes in children for the topic that contestants in that particular competition had to choose ("Beauty"). Yet another, Melanie Britton, rose to prominence through her gifts to the arts (Block). There are also competitions specifically for Vietnamese people, promoting the beauty of all races (Location). Additionally, beauty pageants can promote the future of the individual. Some competitions offer modeling career opportunities to the winner of the competitions (“Beauty”). In addition, a person still indicates on their CV that they won a beauty contest. They remember the days when they participated in competitions and learned life skills (Trujillo). Despite these positive aspects of beauty pageants, there are many other negative ones. One of them, a negative message, demeans women in general. For example, the winners of these beauty contests benefit from high visibility in the media. As mentioned earlier, winners of some competitions have the opportunity to join the modeling career (“Beauty”).
